Holden Cruze p2096 bank 1 sensor 2 lean fault

Symptom:

The vehicle shows a check engine light on the dash board, the fault code is p2096 the description is post catalyst fuel trim system low limit.
the driving technique to make the symptom reoccur is warm up the vehicle so both o2 sensors front and rear are ready to send signal back to PCM, drive for 5 mins and drive to 80 kmh and back off the accelerator this will see that the o2 sensor both reach 0.00v when the vehicle is stopped and back to idle the front o2 sensor will start to cycle again, the rear o2 sensor will be at 0.12v – 0.18v and steady generally the voltage will take a while to rise, back to normal of 0.76v which is in the normal range of operation.

after this the check engine light will not come on the dash board but the fault code p2096 will be set in the PCM, during the test drive if you clear and carry out the same road test it will also be set again as the issue is still the same. this method of testing was the only way I could reproduce the fault time and time again.

 

Diagnostics:

the vehicle had been to another mechanic and several fault code clear attempts made the check engine light only appear 2-3 days later,grey holden cruze

during the diagnostic phase we removed the o2 sensors front and rear and visually checked the o2 sensor we found that both the front and rear sensors where green which indicates ethanol fuel has been used.

  • Check STFT and LTFT to make sure as close to zero as possible
  • Clean sensors and re-road test.
  • Change front and rear o2 sensor if you think it is lazy and not reading correctly.
  • Carry out TSB listed below
  • Repeat road test to confirm the fault is now fixed

COMMENTS:

What would be great to know if the oxygen sensors them selves where the fix or that after resetting the PCM, with updated calibration files, the vehicle had to be reset to be a new vehicle, which was the fix the complete reset, or the oxygen sensors. all I can tell you that if both are done in conjunction to one another it works like it should.

Models: 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

This PI is being revised to update the Recommendation/Instructions information. Please discard PI0422.

Condition/Concern

Some customers may comment they are not experiencing any engine performance issues and yet the MIL is on. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P2096: Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Low Limit Bank 1 could falsely set due to an incorrect calibration. There are no driveability issues related to this DTC.

Recommendation/Instructions

To determine if DTC P2096 set falsely, view the freeze frame data for the DTC. If the freeze frame data shows the following values, it is likely that the DTC was falsely set.
•Ambient Air Temperature less than 5°C/41°F
•Engine Speed is less than 1200 RPMs
•Vehicle Speed = 0 kmh/mph
•*Accelerator Pedal Position is = 0%

If the DTC was set falsely, a revised engine calibration has been developed to address this issue. Reprogram the engine control module (ECM) with updated calibration file using the TIS2WEB Service Programming System (SPS) application.

When using a Multiple Diagnostic Interface (MDI) for reprogramming, ensure that it is updated with the latest software version.

During programming, the battery voltage must be maintained within the proper range of 12-15 volts. Only use the approved Midtronics® PSC 550 Battery Maintainer (SPS Programming Support Tool EL-49642) or equivalent during programming.
