Holiday driving tips:
for safe travel

To avoid driver fatigue:

  • Do not drive during your normal sleeping hours;

  • Take a break at least every two hours;

  • If you start to suffer from highway hypnosis, pull over immediately - do not try to push on to the next town or planned stop; and

  • Be sensible on the road - don't push yourself or the vehicle too hard. After all, you're on holiday.

Safety Checks Before travelling:

  • Complete any regular service that is due or may fall due while away;

  • Check tyre tread depth and pressure. Remember - pressure may need adjusting if the car is carrying a heavy load;

  • Ensure the spare tyre is in good repair and has the required tyre pressure;

  • Check that wheel nuts are secure, but not so tight you are unable to remove them;

  • Check that all equipment necessary to change a flat tyre is in the boot and in good working order;

  • Ensure that all lights are functioning;

  • Check the oil - but make sure the vehicle is on level ground and the
    engine is cool before doing so;

  • Check coolant levels;

  • Fill windscreen washer bottle and check the wipers are in good
    repair and cleaned of any oils;

  • Check battery water levels - ensure that the plates, visible through
    the holes, are covered; and

  • Ensure that the brake fluid level is between the minimum and maximum
    marks.
