Holiday driving tips:
for safe travel
To
avoid driver fatigue:
-
Do not
drive during your normal sleeping hours;
-
Take a
break at least every two hours;
-
If you
start to suffer from highway hypnosis, pull over
immediately - do not try to push on to the next town
or planned stop; and
-
Be
sensible on the road - don't push yourself or the
vehicle too hard. After all, you're on holiday.
Safety Checks Before travelling:
-
Complete
any regular service that is due or may fall due while
away;
-
Check
tyre tread depth and pressure. Remember - pressure may
need adjusting if the car is carrying a heavy load;
-
Ensure
the spare tyre is in good repair and has the required
tyre pressure;
-
Check
that wheel nuts are secure, but not so tight you are
unable to remove them;
-
Check
that all equipment necessary to change a flat tyre is
in the boot and in good working order;
-
Ensure
that all lights are functioning;
-
Check
the oil - but make sure the vehicle is on level ground
and the
engine is cool before doing so;
-
Check
coolant levels;
-
Fill
windscreen washer bottle and check the wipers are in
good
repair and cleaned of any oils;
-
Check
battery water levels - ensure that the plates, visible
through
the holes, are covered; and
-
Ensure
that the brake fluid level is between the minimum and
maximum
marks.
